In a major victory for cyber security and public safety, specialized cyber crime units in coordinated raids across multiple states have dismantled a sophisticated criminal syndicate responsible for swindling crores of rupees from citizens through fraudulent 'digital arrest' extortion scams.
The cyber operatives targeted senior citizens and professionals by placing deceptive voice and video calls posing as senior enforcement officers from the CBI, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and state police branches, falsely claiming that illicit parcels or money laundering activities had been traced to the victims' national identity numbers.
Modus Operandi Exposed
Investigators revealed that the gang utilized sophisticated artificial studio backdrops featuring police insignia, forged judicial summons, and spoofed caller IDs to intimidate victims into transferring their savings to so-called 'secure government verification accounts' within hours.
During the operation, police seized:
- Over 45 high-end smartphones and encrypted communication tablets
- 210 active pre-activated SIM cards registered under forged KYC identities
- Multiple point-of-sale machines and 38 frozen mule bank accounts holding frozen funds
Authorities reiterated that no law enforcement or judicial agency conducts arrests or demands financial transfers over Skype or WhatsApp calls, urging citizens to report any suspicious communication immediately to the national cyber helpline 1930.
